A felony is a criminal offense which is
punishable by a fine, probation, and/or jail, but involves more
serious offenses than do misdemeanors. A felony of the third degree
is punishable by up to a $5,000 fine, five (5) years probation, five
(5) years jail. A felony of the second degree is punishable by up
to a $10,000 fine, fifteen (15) years probation, fifteen (15) years
jail. A felony of the first degree is punishable by up to $10,000
fine, thirty (30) years probation, thirty (30) years jail. Some
felonies have minimum required jail sentences upon conviction.
There are also criminal offenses punishable by life imprisonment (a
life felony) and others punishable by life imprisonment or death
(a capital felony). An example of a third degree felony is Grand
Theft of property valued at more than $300 but less than $20,000.
An example of a second degree felony is Grand Theft of property
valued at $20,000 but less than $100,000. An example of a first
degree felony is Grand Theft of property valued at $100,000 or more.
